Yoga Product Review: The Tiger Paw

For those yogis out there who have experienced a wrist injury or are experiencing on-going wrist pain, the Tiger Paw might be a good addition to your yoga equipment bag. I’ve been using the Tiger Paw on and off again for the past two months, and it helps quite a bit to provide extra support for my bad wrist. The Tiger Paw is actually designed for gymnasts, but it’s perfect also for yogis who practice in a way that is stressful on the wrists joints. Anyone who does handstands, arm balances, Chaturangas, etc. may want to try the Tiger Paw as a way of supporting the wrist and preventing hyper-extension of the wrist joint.

Of course, good form, proper alignment, and sensitivity to overexertion are the best ways to avoid straining the wrists and possible injury. And wearing the Tiger Paw does not mean that you can suddenly do anything and everything on your wrists without any regard for safety or the limitations of your body.

Overall, my experience so far has been very good with the Tiger Paw. My only complaint is that wearing a glove-like object during yoga can take some getting used to, especially since your hands will no longer be in full and immediate contact with the mat. Some people really like to feel “connected” to their mat, and the Tiger Paw can be annoying for such people. For me, the advantages of wearing a Tiger Paw far outweigh any minor discomfort or inconvenience.

Overall: A-

This product obviously isn’t for everyone. But for those people who need a little extra wrist support, the Tiger Paw works way better than athletic tape or some of the other solutions I’ve seen people try. Now I just need to figure out how to clean it properly. The Tiger Paw is made out of leather, and I imagine that you can’t just throw it into the wash with the rest of your laundry…

  1. These look like a good product, and since I’ve been having wrist issues, I purchased a pair, which arrived today.

Forgive the silly question, but how do you wear these? The “instructions” say to put the pad on the back of the hand, but if I do that, the only way to make it work is to have the one marked “L” on my right hand. Perhaps I’m jumping to conclusions that “L” actually stands for “left.” 🙂

  2. The padded part is in your palm; there should be a plastic and/or foam piece that you can slide into the back side, to support the top of the wrist. You’ll know you have it on correctly if the velcro pieces fold over, not under, your wrist.

  3. Thanks! The “L” must stand for “Large” … I’ve been using them for a few weeks now, and they really help quite a lot – I haven’t had any tendonitis flare-ups since I started wearing them, and it was really a problem previously. Thanks again for the great review & pointer to a great product.

  4. Hi There, between WAGs gloves and Mudra Tiger Paws which did you find worked better? I suffer from carpel tunnel from practicing vinyasa. I tried WAGs but they are too painful in between my fingers, otherwise they are wonderful. I want to try the Tiger Paws but the return policy isn’t very good. Your feedback would be great!

    Thank you
