Digital Asana Project: Handstand to “Upward Cock”

Going from Adho Mukha Vrksasana to Urdvha Kukkutasana — aka handstand to “upward cock” — is a pretty challenging transition. It requires that one already be able to do handstand with a high level of control and balance; one must also be able to get the legs into full lotus without any help from the hands. Here’s a description of what you will see me doing in the video.

Step 1. First, I come into handstand.

Step 2. After finding my balance in handstand , I carefully wind the legs into a full lotus.

Step 3. Next, I find my balance again for a moment before slowly tucking the lotus down, keeping the hips over the shoulders for as long as possible, and being extra careful not to lean back into the palms. This is key. As soon as the weight goes back instead of more forward towards the fingers, the whole thing comes crashing down.

Step 4. Finally, I set the full lotus on the back of my arms and come into what is known as “upward cock” (yes, that’s the literal translation), or Urdvha Kukkutasana.
