Doga

When I lived in Los Angeles, I used to see ads and signs for “Doga”, but I never knew what it was exactly. Yoga for dogs? Yoga with dogs? I couldn’t even figure out how to pronounce it. Dough-Gah? Dawg-Uh?

This recent piece in the NY Times explains the Doga phenomenon. Since I’m not a dog owner, I’m having a bit (a lot, actually) of trouble understanding what this craze is all about. Maybe you just have to be a true dog lover to get it.

I am trying to be open-minded about this but I just don’t get it! Watch out Eugene, I might just show up in your next class with my five adorable kitties and have a Catoga class…. However, I believe there is something very American in all this: the inability to leave things be and enjoy them as such. Everything this country adopts is newly shaped, molded, reinvented etc… Yoga, of course, could not be the exception!

I love dogs (I have two) and love yoga but I’m pretty sure that doga is not for me. Maybe these classes are in response to the Mommy & Me type yoga classes out there? I see a lot of those in Brooklyn where I live.

I’m right there with you, not sure I fully “get it” either. I know my dog doesn’t have the patience or the know-how to really appreciate something like this either…

Doga is a great idea. I like to lay the mat out for my pit bull to lay on while I practice alongside her. Surprisingly, it’s one of the few things that calms her down. However, I can’t imagine that she would be able to keep her cool in a yoga class with other dogs.

I never thought this trend would make its way out of New York or L.A., but I caught a story about a resort for dogs offering Doga classes in Madison. What is going on in our world when we willingly pay to essentially rub our dogs’ bellies?
