Yoga Product Review: The Tiger Paw

For those yogis out there who have experienced a wrist injury or are experiencing on-going wrist pain, the Tiger Paw might be a good addition to your yoga equipment bag. I’ve been using the Tiger Paw on and off again for the past two months, and it helps quite a bit to provide extra support for my bad wrist. The Tiger Paw is actually designed for gymnasts, but it’s perfect also for yogis who practice in a way that is stressful on the wrists joints. Anyone who does handstands, arm balances, Chaturangas, etc. may want to try the Tiger Paw as a way of supporting the wrist and preventing hyper-extension of the wrist joint. (more…)

Lululemon Athletica in Beverly Hills recently had to shut down because of a massive flood. They are reopened now, and, in celebration of surviving the flood, they are having an event tomorrow from 10-7. It’s also their one-year anniversary celebration.

There will be refreshments and live entertainment. I’ll be there from noon until about 1:00PM doing yoga demonstrations in the store window as a sort of living mannequin. Come check it out! The address is 334 N. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills, just north of Wilshire. (Free parking across the street for one hour in the public garage.)

The New Manduka

The new eKO mat by Manduka is making its debut right now. You can actually buy it at some studios already, or you can pre-order it on the Manduka website. The mats ship, I think, on October 15th. They’re giving 10% off if you pre-order now.

I’ve actually had a chance to try out the new mat, but only in a demo setting. Once I actually get my new mat and put it to use in a class setting for a week or so, I’ll post a more thorough review. In the meantime, here are some of my initial impressions of the mat:

1. The mat weighs the same as the classic Black Mat, but somehow it feels flimsy in comparison.

2. The eKO is a bit squishier than the Black Mat, for better or worse.

3. The eKO is a little stickier, it seemed to me, than the Black Mat. It’s made of natural rubber, so it has a texture/feel that is very similar to the Jade Harmony Mat.

4. My biggest concern is durability. Let’s see how it stands up to some serious usage…

More thoughts, comments, etc. once I get my new eKO and take it for a test spin.

New West L.A. Yoga Studio

Starting in roughly two weeks, I’ll be teaching my first classes at a new yoga studio here in LA. I plan to teach 3-4 classes per week. There are four other teachers who will be teaching at the new studio, in addition to me, and they will also be offering several classes during the week.

I have to keep a lid on the details of the new studio until it officially opens. But, in the meantime, if you live in LA area and would like to be included in our mailing list, please send me a quick email at eugenespark [at] yahoo [dot] com. We will be having a big kick-off party in a few weekends, with free food, dancing, singing, yoga demos, etc.

One important note about the new studio: ALL CLASSES will be donation based. There will be a recommended donation, but if you really can’t give more than a dollar or two, please come anyway. Our philosophy is that we don’t want anyone not practicing yoga because they can’t afford it.
